History: In the beginning, there was Elizabeth Keays - the first teacher in Fort Collins The opening of Waverly School corresponded with the increase in farming in Northern Colorado at the turn of the 20th century - when more families flocked to its rural expanses and the need for larger, better-equipped country schoolhouses grew. That fall, the school opened its doors to two teachers and just over 100 students, an enrollment that was up nearly 30 percent from the year prior, according to the Courier. Waverly School dates backs to 1886 but moved into its existing building in 1918 - the same year it was built for $13,000, according to a Fort Collins Weekly Courier article at the time. The property is listed for $600,000 and has churned interest from community members, school groups and churches, according to Chase Christensen, one of its listing brokers at Cushman & Wakefield.
